The As Good As New has been located at 33 Bridge Street in Carleton Place for close to 30 years.  Snuggled between The Good Food Company and St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, the As Good As New store has served as one of Interval House’s largest fundraisers for just as long.

To meet the clothing needs for women and children who were seeking refuge at the shelter, Interval House initially sought donations from the community.  This effort inevitably initiated the As Good As New store in 1980, a volunteer-run second-hand clothing boutique that also provides funds to assist in operating the shelter.

As a grassroots, volunteer organization and one of the earlier shelters to open in Canada, Interval House was desperately in need of funds to maintain its services.  For years, the store has resold “gently worn” donations to the community and provided abused women and their children with clothing for free.  Yet, in the beginning, as new staff were hired to help run the shelter, the As Good As New revenues also helped pay many salaries—on more than one occasion, staff pay cheques were dependent upon receipts gathered from the store.

Since its move to Bridge Street in 1981, the As Good As New store has undergone many changes, the majority of which have occurred in just the last year.  In the spring of 2005, the store underwent a complete overhaul: walls were torn down, and the old hardwood floors and tin ceilings were restored.  While the store maintains its warm boutique style, the renovations have helped to make it more spacious, pristine, and barrier-free.

Today, the As Good As New store remains one of Interval House’s most successful fundraising efforts, largely due to the incredible generosity, compassion, and hard work of its volunteers. In this past fiscal year alone, volunteers have already contributed more than 4170 hours of their time and energy to smoothly running the store.  The store operations are still overseen by a volunteer committee who together contribute an additional 100 hours of their time.

The wealth of local donations and volunteer hours that keep the As Good As New store operating are a testimony to the commitment and strength of our community.  Each and every contribution directly helps to keep Interval House afloat, and therefore goes a long way to help women and children rebuild their lives after abuse.  Check out How You Can Help to learn more!
