EMC News – Lanark County Interval House and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lanark County have partnered up once again in serving the families of Lanark County. They will be hosting a children’s clothing sale from Thursday, May 3 to Saturday, May 5 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The sale will be held at Modern Thymes Health Food Store at 11 Russell St. E. in Smiths Falls in their special events room.

“There will be so many fantastic donations from our big supporters at OutGROW OutPLAY and Carleton Place Mom 2 Mom Sale!” states Robin Heald from Big Brothers Big Sisters. “We have great quality brand name clothing from birth to size 8 as well as toys and supplies.”

OutGROW OutPLAY has been a supporter of Big Brothers Big Sisters and Interval House for a number of years. Consignors often choose to donate the items that do not sell at their event to charity. With this year’s Carleton Place Mom 2 Mom Sale, some vendors donated items to Interval House and Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Both Lanark County Interval House and Big Brothers Big Sisters have volunteer driven social enterprise stores where every dollar goes to their non-profit. The As Good As New Store in Carleton Place sells clothing and household goods to fund programs from Interval House. Big Brothers Big Sisters has Jewel’s Gently Used Clothing Stores in both Smiths Falls and Perth. Each of these three stores provides funding exclusively for programs in Lanark County for our at-risk families.

“A big thank you goes to Modern Thymes for housing our event and all of the wonderful volunteers that make an event like this a great success,” explains Alyssa Burns, marketing coordinator for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Proceeds from the sale will go to support the valuable programs that Lanark County Interval House and Big Brothers Big Sisters provide in our community. These two organizations support local at-risk families who need support and mentorship at their most critical times.

For more information about how you can support Lanark County Interval House and their As Good As New Store, call 613-257-3469 or visit www.lcih.org. To find out how you can support Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lanark County and their Jewel’s Gently Used Clothing Stores, call 613-283-0570 or visit www.bigbrothersbigsisterslanark.ca.

Dress the kids you love while making a difference in a child’s life. Don’t miss this fun event which will boast hundreds of items at dramatically low prices.

The fastest runner to finish the course was Perth’s Tommy Sommerville in just 18:43, but he placed fourth overall for being within 16 seconds off his predicted time.

We would like to send a big thank you to the town of Carleton Place and the CP Arena Staff for allowing LCIH to set up a spontaneous bakesale on International Women’s Day.

We had baking left over from the successful IWD film presentation the previous night. And considering this wasn’t your average rice-crispie square bakesale (our wonderful volunteers had baked luxurious treats like Red Velvet Cupcakes, Apple Tortes, Apple Cheesecake, Maple Syrup Carrot Cake, Mississippi Mudpie and an assortment of mini cheesecakes) it was just too good to go to waste.

So we packed it up and brought it down to the arena where we sold out in no time. Those figure skaters like their baked goods! We raised $90 to put directly into our shelter programming and got to spread some International Women’s Day joy. Thanks again to our volunteers, the arena and everyone who donated to LCIH and enjoyed the baking. A big success!

Q: What is a Prediction Run?

A: As a part of your race registration, you must predict what your finish time will be. There are no distance markers along the course. Upon finishing the 5k, the closer you have come to matching your predicted finish time, the better your final ranking for the race finishing order. We do not know the winner until the last person crosses the line. (Recognition of first person across finish line too)

Proceeds from this Prediction Run are donated to the Lanark County Interval House

EMC Sports – Shake off those winter cobwebs and get out running in the first local race of the season.

The sixth annual Spring Goat Run is set to pound pavement and local trails March 24. The run is a prediction race, which means the winner is the person whose actual time comes closest their predicted time.

Mark Czubak, 2012 race director for the Spring Goat Run, said the event is all-inclusive.

“This time of year we encourage people to get out and get active,” he said. “This is a fun event because participants run as fast as they want and as long as they get close to their predicted time, they could win.”

The start is set for 8:30 a.m. at The Running Goat on Foster Street in Perth.

This year, the spring run supports Lanark County Interval House. “I feel that (its) important role in the community can not be measured,” said Czubak.

He cited information from the organization that said in 2011 alone, Lanark County Interval House responded to 1,875 crisis calls and served more than 100 women and children at the emergency shelter, while 445 women and children were helped by its outreach services.

Last year, the beneficiary of the Spring Goat Run was the Japanese Tsunami Relief Fund, which received $400 from the event. Czubak asked that interest participants register early as a courtesy to race timers, either at The Running Goat or online at www.onestoprace.com and searching for “Perth” to find the 5K Spring Goat Run registration form. As a rule, Czubak said no watches, iPods or phones are allowed on the course. As an added incentive, Czubak said this year, the first 100 runners to register will receive a Scottish tam.

“Bring a friend and enjoy a challenging and fun morning in Perth,” he said.

“Join us for the suspense of seeing each runner cross the line and possibly win.”
